Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme, developed by the National Cyber Security Centre, designed to help businesses protect themselves against the most common cyber threats.

Now widely recognised as an industry standard, Cyber Essentials provides an up-to-date, affordable, and effective means for organisations to gain confidence that their suppliers, or other third parties, have effectively implemented fundamental technical controls.
The scheme defines five essential technical controls which, when correctly implemented, can reduce the risk of cyber attacks by up to 80%. These controls focus on protecting your devices, networks and data from the everyday threats that commonly target businesses.
There are two levels of certification:
- Cyber Essentials – a self‑assessment covering the core technical security controls
- Cyber Essentials Plus – includes an independent, hands‑on technical audit
